Background of the Study

Agriculture remains the backbone of the economy in Dutse Local Government Area (LGA), Jigawa State, where the majority of the population depends on farming for their livelihood. However, agricultural productivity is often hindered by limited access to timely and relevant information about modern farming techniques, market trends, and climate adaptation strategies. Community radio, as a tool of development communication, has proven to be instrumental in bridging information gaps in rural areas. With its ability to disseminate localized, culturally relevant content, community radio empowers farmers with knowledge that enhances productivity and sustainability (Musa & Bello, 2023; Ahmed et al., 2024). Recent studies emphasize that participatory programming, where farmers actively contribute to the content, fosters engagement and practical application of information (Adebayo et al., 2025). This study explores the role of community radio in promoting agricultural development in Dutse LGA, focusing on its impact on knowledge dissemination and farmer empowerment.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite its agricultural potential, Dutse LGA faces challenges such as low productivity, limited market access, and vulnerability to climate change. The lack of effective communication channels to provide timely agricultural information exacerbates these challenges (Okafor & Yusuf, 2023). Community radio offers a unique solution, but its role and effectiveness in addressing these issues remain underexplored in the context of Dutse LGA (Bello & Ahmed, 2024). This study investigates how community radio can enhance agricultural development, focusing on its capacity to deliver relevant information and foster community participation.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of community radio in disseminating agricultural information in Dutse LGA.

  2. To identify the types of agricultural information most effectively communicated through community radio in Dutse LGA.

  3. To evaluate the impact of community radio on improving farming practices and productivity in Dutse LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How does community radio disseminate agricultural information in Dutse LGA?

  2. What types of agricultural information are most effectively communicated through community radio in Dutse LGA?

  3. What is the impact of community radio on improving farming practices and productivity in Dutse LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Community radio significantly improves the dissemination of agricultural information in Dutse LGA.

  2. Certain types of agricultural information are more effectively communicated through community radio in Dutse LGA.

  3. Community radio positively impacts farming practices and productivity in Dutse LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study underscores the potential of community radio as a tool for agricultural development, providing insights for policymakers, media practitioners, and agricultural extension workers. By exploring the role of participatory programming and localized content, the study highlights strategies for enhancing the relevance and effectiveness of community radio in rural development. It also contributes to the broader discourse on communication for development, particularly in the agricultural sector.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on Dutse Local Government Area, Jigawa State, examining the role of community radio in disseminating agricultural information and improving farming practices.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Community Radio: A radio station that serves a specific community, offering localized and participatory content.

  2. Agricultural Development: Improvements in farming practices, productivity, and sustainability within a community.

  3. Dutse Local Government Area: A region in Jigawa State, Nigeria, with a predominantly agrarian economy.
